"When should I visit Wayanad?" is the question we get asked more than almost any other, and the honest answer is: it depends what you're chasing. Every season here has a distinct personality. Here's how to pick yours.
Winter (October–February): For Trekking & Clear Views
This is peak season, and for good reason. Skies are clear, mornings are crisp (sometimes down to 15°C), and visibility on treks like Chembra Peak and Edakkal Caves is at its best. If your trip revolves around hiking, wildlife spotting, or simply wanting guaranteed sunshine for photos, this is your window. It's also the busiest period, so book suites well ahead, especially over the New Year and Christmas stretch.
Summer (March–May): For Waterfalls Before the Rains
Warmer and drier, with waterfalls still flowing from the tail end of winter groundwater but without monsoon's dangerous currents. It's arguably the safest window to actually swim at spots like Soochipara. Days can get warm in the afternoon, but early mornings and evenings stay pleasant. A good choice if you want outdoor activity without winter's crowds.
Monsoon (June–September): For Mist, Waterfalls, and Quiet
This is the season most first-time visitors skip, and the one most repeat guests specifically request. Waterfalls run at full, dramatic force, mist rolls through the tea valleys most mornings, and the crowds thin out considerably. The tradeoff: some treks and outdoor activities get rescheduled around heavy showers, and a few waterfalls become too dangerous for swimming. If you don't mind adjusting plans around weather, monsoon Wayanad is genuinely the most photogenic version of itself, and it's also when suite availability and rates are most favorable.
Our Honest Recommendation
If this is your first trip and you want to check off treks and waterfalls without any weather uncertainty, aim for December–February. If you've been before, or you're drawn to the mist-over-the-valley version of Wayanad you've seen in photos, don't rule out monsoon. Most guests who try it once come back for it specifically.
