Wayanad has no airport or major railway station of its own — part of what keeps it quiet and undeveloped. That means every trip here involves a final road stretch from a nearby city. Here's how to plan that leg, whichever way you're arriving.

By Air

Calicut International Airport (Kozhikode) is the closest, roughly 2 hours from Vythiri, and the most convenient option for most travelers, with regular domestic and several international connections.

Kannur International Airport is a similar distance and a good alternative depending on your originating city's flight options.

Bangalore (Kempegowda) Airport is further out (around 6–7 hours by road) but often has more frequent and cheaper flight options if you're connecting from elsewhere in India — many guests fly into Bangalore and treat the drive itself as part of the trip.

By Train

The nearest major railway stations are Kozhikode (Calicut) and Kannur, both roughly 2–2.5 hours from Vythiri by road, with good connectivity to major Indian cities. Mysuru is a workable alternative if you're coming via the Bangalore route, with the final stretch continuing by road.

By Road

Self-driving or hiring a car is the most common way to complete the final approach to Wayanad, regardless of how you get to the region. Our homepage route map has turn-by-turn driving directions and timing from Mangalore, Bangalore, Calicut, and Kannur — worth checking before you finalize how you're getting here.

Our Recommendation

For most travelers, flying into Calicut and driving the remaining 2 hours is the fastest, least complicated route. If you're coming from Bangalore specifically and have the time, the full road trip is genuinely worth doing — see our Bangalore to Wayanad Road Trip Guide for the full breakdown.
